What Pick Should I Use?

What pick should you use and does it actually make a difference? Yes it makes a difference for sure but there is no one right answer. What I mean by that is you need to decide for yourself and the only way to do that is to try a bunch of different picks and then choose the one that feels best to you.

The pick does make a difference in sound for sure but once you get a pick you feel comfortable with you’ll learn to adapt your playing style in order to produce different sounds. One of the great things about the guitar is that it can produce a huge variety of tones and sounds depending on how to attack the strings. So the pick is just the medium you use strike the strings. The difference in sound comes from HOW you do that.

But I digress… If you’re just starting to learn acoustic guitar I would suggest a softer pick for the strumming and a medium thickness for the single note playing. Watch the video below to see why.

Lately I ditched my style of pick that I’ve been using the last 10 years or so for a smaller Jazz III style pick and I quite like it. What picks do you use? Any specific preferences? Let me know by leaving some comments below.

Have a good one and we’ll chat soon.

I feel like choosing a pick is a very personal thing, no one can tell you one will be better or worse for you because it truly depends on your own personal preferences. For me I feel a lot more comfortable with a much thinner pick, and sometimes no pick at all. My sister however uses very thick picks. So when it comes to finding the perfect pick, practice with a variety! And choose which ever feels most comfortable.
