Steel String or Nylon String Acoustic Guitar?

When it comes to choosing between a steel string and nylon string acoustic guitar it really depends on your own personal taste. What I mean by that is that you need to know what sounds excite you. What do you want to play on the guitar? What styles of music do you like to listen to?

Based on those answers you will be able to choose the appropriate guitar and you’ll be much better equipped because you will then have the right guitar to play those styles and ultimately achieve the same tones that excite you.

So if you really dig classical and spanish guitar then you’d be much better off getting a nylon string guitar. This way when you play Greensleeves or Spanish Romance then it will actually sound authentic and this should in turn inspire and motivate you to practice even more. If on the other hand you prefer blues, country, rock and pop then a steel string will get you those kind of tones.

Watch the video below as I elaborate a bit more.

In closing I’d like to say though, especially in Guitar Land, rules are there to be broken! Of course you can learn Greensleeves on a steel string and play a killer 12 Bar Blues on a Nylon string. So don’t be bogged down by it too much. Just get a guitar which sound you actually like and hopefully it will inspire and motivate you to delve deeper and deeper into learning and playing this amazing instrument.

Have a good one and let me know which “sounds” you prefer!

Cheers,

Charl

That is so true about the types of guitars. I myself am looking to play folk music, a little blues, and maybe country on the side, and steel strings are best there, but other types are better for other people. Cheers on a good article. Now, off to look for lessons on this site to use my guitar!
