How Long Should I Practice?

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of questions from people inquiring about learning guitar and one of the main questions they ask is “How long should I practice?”

Here’s a video where I talk about this topic in more detail.

Well that’s easy: “As much as possible, for as long as possible, every single day for the rest of your life!” O.K that was tongue in cheek but before I tell you why let me help you make a very important distinction about learning to play guitar. Here goes… Learning to play the guitar and mastering the guitar are two entirely different things and depending on which option you want to go for there are two entirely different answers.

If you want to master the guitar or at least have half a shot at it you would need 10000 hours to begin with and then I would refer you to my tongue in cheek answer.

However if you just want to learn to play the guitar for fun and by fun I mean: Playing easy guitar songs, learning the fundamentals about the styles you’re into and generally just having a good time on the guitar, so if this is you then I have a different answer for you. 48 hours. 48 hours? Yes and here’s what I mean. All you need is 48 hours broken up into 30 minutes a day for 5 to 6 days a week.

After 4 months of practicing guitar you would have put in 48 hours of focused practicing and I guarantee you that when you keep this up for the 16 weeks you will see some astounding results. Remember the frequency and consistency with which you practice is way more important than the amount of time you put into a single practice session. So rather go for practicing in smaller chunks of time like 30 minutes a day as opposed to 1 or 2 hours one day a week.

During the 30 minute practice session you will learn guitar chords, interesting rhythm playing, easy guitar songs plus some scales, melodic exploration, ear training and most important you will leave some time at the end of you practice sessions to mess around and play whatever it is you want to play.

It really is that simple. If you really want to learn to play the guitar I’m sure you can find 30 minutes a day to make this dream a reality. If you need any help, assistance or further information just head on over to www.rhythmguitarzero2hero.com/gettingstarted.
