Does Not Play Well With Others!

There is a ton of things you will learn by playing with other musicians and I can’t recommend it highly enough. To be honest that is where I learned most of what I know & if you’re just starting to learn acoustic guitar then you might be wondering “Where, what, how and when?” Many questions you have my padawan, answer them I will. :-)

Try and get a friend to start playing an instrument at the same time as you. If that’s possible you’ll have someone to share the journey with and a little accountability never hurt anyone. Incidentally that is how I started. My best friend at school, and skater buddy, was a musical genius and his parents finally gave in to his incessant nagging and bought him a drum kit. He suggested I should get one too but I didn’t know of many two drummer bands so I got a bass instead and the rest is history. (Luckily there was an upgrade from bass to guitar after my first year of playing. Which was the result of another friend who played bass and all we needed to start a band was a guitarist. I happily obliged!)

Get a couple of well known tunes and learn them off by heart & whenever the opportunity presents itself you will have a few tunes that others are bound to know. The 12 Bar Blues is a great place to start for guitarists. 3 Chords & the blues scale is all you need for hours of jamming.

Going to jam nights is another great opportunity to put what you’ve learned to the test but you might not have that luxury while you’re still learning to play the acoustic guitar. Don’t let that stop you from getting some friends together and just play some tunes that you’ve been working on. Don’t put this off, just do it and get out there with your guitar. It truly is a very rewarding experience. You’ll become a better player and meet some great people at the same time.

I filmed a video for you where I discussed some of the other benefits of playing with other musicians.
